Let's face it! Honey bees are now a hot commodity. Their numbers are dwindling and there is a still a huge demand for honey and honey products.
Honey is used as an edible table top item but is also a key ingredient in cosmetics like skin creams and the minerals in honey is vital as supplements and in medicine.
In fact the demand in honey is causing some firsts - bee rustlers are stealing honey bees! In this article they report that a farmer in the UK lost 100 hives. A batch of 6 bee hives is going for £1,800 on the black market -- How crazy is that?
Here is what one of the victims had to say about the thefts: "They would have needed the right equipment and know how to move them without killing them. I assume they were either stolen to order, or it was a desperate bee farmer whose hives had died."
It takes a while to get a full grown bee colony -- that kind of theft must be devestating! I hope we figure out what is causing the loss of bees so this craziness can stop.
What do you think?

That honey bees are responsible for a lot of pollination is not debated. Whether or not there is a pollination crisis is being debated. However there is no disputing that a lot of bee colonies in Europe and the Americas have been dying. That is attributed to either mites or colony collapse disorder.
50% of the natural ingredients of Häagen Dazs ice creams are pollinated by honey bees. The dwindling population of bees is major cause for concern as one in three colonies in the US disappeared over the last several winters.
In order to raise awareness around the honey bee issue Häagen Dazs has been sponsoring a Free Flavor Day every year for the last serveral years. This year's free tasting is on May 12th at participating locations.
Get involved or at least go out and enjoy a scoop of what I think is the best ice cream in the world. At the same time read a little bit about the honey bee issue and pass the word along.
Note: This is not a paid endorsement for Häagen Dazs nor is this blog affiliated with them in any way. I just love their ice cream and I love honey.
